Two letters to W. W. Greenough discuss a paper delivered at a meeting of the British Association for Promotion of Science which compared price-trade versus protection in Victoria and South Wales, Australia; the tax on gas and petroleum; and national accounts for the fiscal year. A third letter to the Walden Tariff Reform Club (Massachusetts) discusses the 1884 presidential election and its relation to the progress of tariff reform. There are also two engravings and a photograph of Wells. The correspondents include Charles W. Gardner, W.W. Greenough, and S. O'Donnell.
